Rakai District borders Kagera Region in Tanzania to the south, Kalangala District, Masaka District and Sembabule District to the east, Sembabule District to the north, Kiruhura District to the northwest and Isingiro District the southwest. The district surface area totals 4,989 square kilometres (1,926 sq mi).
Subsistence agriculture is the dominant economic activity in the district, employing over 85% of the people. Crops grown include matooke, beans, cassava and potatoes for food while coffee is the main cash crop. Livestock raised includes cattle, goats, pigs and chicken.
